As a newer organization formed just over 2 years, Intermountain Healing Hearts has seen phenomenal growth. Intermountain Healing Hearts started out with 10 families participating and today the organization has grown to over 225+ families that currently receive support. Our main goal is that anyone seeking support now has a way to receive it. Support comes in many different ways, whether by connecting with other members through the on-line forum, receiving a Hospital Care Bag while undergoing heart procedures at Primary Children’s Medical Center located in Salt Lake City, Utah, attending Social gatherings, or participating in different Awareness Activities that help educate the public concerning Congenital Heart Defects, it’s about bring the Congenital Heart Community together.

Membership is free to anyone that seeks support which includes those that are awaiting the birth of a baby that is known to have pre-existing CHD’s (Congenital Heart Defects) to adult CHD survivors. Unfortunately, CHD’s are the number 1 birth defect and in the U.S nearly twice as many children die each year from CHD’s than all forms of childhood cancers combined, yet, funding for pediatric cancer research is 5 times higher than for CHD’s. CHD’s are the #1 cause of birth defect related infant deaths. Of the children stricken with CHD’s, 1 in 10 have a fatal birth defect. For the IHH Membership that sadly have suffered the loss of a loved one, we also offer an Angel Support Group, as they too need to have a place to be able to grieve openly without judgment.

Activities planned for 2010

April 24, 2010 Heart Moms Appreciation Luncheon

May 15, 2010 Family Summer Picnic, Bountiful, Utah

August 13-14, 2010 Family Heart Camp at Camp Wapiti in Tooele, Utah

September 112, 2010 Walk for Healing Hearts – Riverview Park, Provo, Utah

October – Annual IHH Birthday Party (TBA)

December 2010 Festival of Tree’s.

I am using the conference room at my office, because I thought it was centrally located in the valley. If you are unable to attend, but want to be a part of the camp, please let me know what aspects interest you, and I will be happy to find a place for you to help. For those willing to help, but are either too far away, or are at home unable to leave your home, I will think of something for you to do so you can be a part of the action.

Remember…..you DO NOT need to serve on the committee in order to attend heart camp. It is open to all heart families, regardless of you ability to help with the planning.

Just a few feet into the front doors of Green River High School a sign hangs on the wall greeting those who enter.

While simple in nature, the meaning behind the sign has a far greater significance.

Surrounded by a hand written heart the sign reads “Bryson is our MVP.”

A few feet further into the school the signs begin to multiply and numerous students walking through the halls can be seen wearing blue Make a Wish bracelets with Bryson’s name written on them.

They are all reminders of the student council’s 2010 Make A Wish event.

The child being sponsored by the council is 3-year-old Bryson Quinney of Lyman who was born with half a heart.

Thursday the final results of the students’ efforts will be made public, and they are hoping to hit their goal of $30,000.

The goal would be enough to fully fund his wish and the wishes of three other children with life threatening conditions.”

“The whole community has given to what is a great cause,” GRHS Principal Jamie Christensen said. “One of the things I am proudest of is the kids and sponsors. They do a lot of work for a couple of weeks.”

Junior Class President Taylor Mende said a lot of work went into planning the events, and they actually began working on them in November.

Just days from the results, council advisor Kris Weidner is pleased with the council’s efforts.

“The students have done a great job,” Weidner said.

Student Body President Sarah Pickle complimented local residents and said there has been a lot of community support.”

Student Council President Randi McClure has worked with the council’s Make A Wish program in the past and feels this year is different with having a local child involved.

“Bryson being involved has helped,” she said. “It’s a really touching story.”

Freshmen Class President Ryan Williams feels having Bryson on hand has really helped the community come together.

Pickle and several members of the council were able to meet Bryson a few days before Christmas.

“You get to know him,” Pickle said.

Bryson was also on hand last week for several events at the high school including a Home Run Derby.

Advisor Matt Freeze said Bryson was excited and high fiving everyone around.

For 3 hours, Bryson was non stop, Weidner said.

While too young to know exactly the meaning behind the event, Pickle said Bryson was still very excited.

At just 3 years old and with the help of council member Ashley Annable, Bryson sang the national anthem.

He was also presented with a baseball autographed by Adrian Gonzalez of the San Diego Padres.

The events also included a McWish night at the Green River McDonald’s.

According to Weidner, at one point during the 3-hour fundraiser, traffic was backed up from the restaurant to Uinta.

“It has been my most succesful fundraiser ever,” McDonalds owner Greg Bailey said. “The community got behind Make A Wish. It was impressive.”

The resturant was able to donate $773.92 of proceeds to Make A Wish. Another $900 plus was raised in donations.

With the goal of $30,000 still within reach Weidner is asking for help from the community at the conclusion of fund raising.

The goal came after Weidner talked with officials at Cody High School who were the top fundraisers in the state last year.

He said donations will be taken at the door.

Weidner added Bryson will be on hand for the games.

In the future, Weidner said the council plans on bringing Bryson back, and he will be on hand to kick off next year’s events.

This is what Chase is doing:

“It can be incredibly rewarding when your vote has a local impact. Chase is giving away $5 million to various charities and needs you to help pick which ones. Simply vote for your favorite nonprofit and then get friends and others on Facebook to do the same. You can select from over 500,000 charities that focus on education, healthcare, housing, environmental issues, combating hunger, arts and culture, human services, and animal welfare. Give your charity the recognition it deserves and needs with Chase Community Giving.

It’s a new Way Forward for giving.”

Please help IHH earn some of this money by signing onto Facebook, becoming a fan of Chase Community Giving, and voting for your favorite charity (Intermountain Healing Hearts of course). This helps an organization that does some much to support our heart heroes and their families.

If you have followed Kaidence you most likely will have a place in your heart also for this next subject. October 24th is a the ‘Nations Day of Service.’ The Quest For The Gift Of Life Foundation is gearing up to try to set a world record. On that day they are trying to get over 9,000 new Organ Donor Registries. Can you think of any better way to give that day?

In correlation with that, Salt Lake will be having its first ever ORGAN DONATION 9k race/walk. We are actually running in honor of all the children that are waiting, will wait and have waited for someone to give them ‘The gift of life’. In our hearts that day will be the children that ran out of time while waiting for a second chance at life. This is why we are doing this. So on that day please come out and RUN WITH KAIDENCE AND INTERMOUNTAIN HEALING HEARTS!

The 9k will be October 24th at 9am at Liberty Park. Kaidence has invited children young and old to come and walk with her on this day. We will be walking, not running and would love you all to grab your strollers, tricycles, walkers whatever and come and join us. This walk is to raise awareness for the need for Organ Donation. A $5 portion of each registration fee will be given to Intermountain Healing Hearts for them to give to Primary Children’s Medical Centers Transplant Program for families. Mark your calendars and we hope to see you there. Follow the link http://www.donatelifeutah.com/ register and find out more info on the race or click the picture on the upper right hand side of the blog. Please snag this button on put it on your blogs to help spread the word!
